The World needs DREAMERS

As previously stated, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program and the Development Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act (DREAM Act) are for minors who entered the country illegally, and allow them to receive a renewable two-year period of deferred action from deportation. Thus, allowing students to stay and reach their educational potential.

As learned in a Digital Media and Democracy class, open source platforms allows room for open ideas and creativityFor instance, iOS only allows ideas to come from one direct source, which is Apple. Android phones, on the other hand, are more of an open source and will allow ideas to be shared and developed between brands, thereby increasing the long-term benefit of value in shared ideas.

What DACA and the DREAM Act do is allow students to develop an education that will benefit everyone in the long run. Allowing these students to stay and receive an education will produce doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs, programmers, physical therapists, teachers, and more people who can make a difference.

Take Estefania, for example. For her DREAM, she states,

“I see myself opening my own physical therapy wellness center. Like I said I want to focus on kids and I want to see if there’s a way my facility can get sponsored to bring physical therapy to kids in underrepresented communities like the Salinas area.”

Or Luis, for instance.

“I want to get to the point where we are successful and making an impact in agriculture. I want to see the [software company] reach new heights where it can give farmers and crop growers valuable data and insight rather than just being another product out there.”

Going to the University of Maryland, I always pass by a sign with a message that the university believes in:

These DACA and DREAMer recipients have the potential to create

CURIOUS, PASSIONATE, INSPIRATIONAL, BOLD, AND FEARLESS IDEAS.

We need these collegiate graduates for the benefit of our society.
