THE DREAM ISN’T DEAD

March 5, 2018 was supposed to be the terrible day. President Trump declared that date as the last day that DACA will be in legislation. “DACA is dead” is what President Trump posted in an angry rampage on twitter. Well, frankly, it’s not. More than 55,000 DACA initial and renewal applications were approved in the first three months of 2018, according to a quarterly report from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, filed in court by the Justice Department, as part of ongoing DACA litigation in California. In addition, more than 51,000 applications remain pending right now.

The Trump administration planned to phase out the program and rescind work permits for hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients, also known as “Dreamers,” beginning March 5th. However, federal district judges in California and New York issued nationwide injunctions blocking it from happening.

This is, however, only temporary extensions to the Dreamer’s ability to remain in their country. Like legal director for the National Immigration Law Center, Karin Tumlin, tweeted, “While very welcome news, Dreamers deserve permanent protection not 2-year extensions.”

So this only means there is much more work to do to keep the D R E A M alive!
