What will happen to Undocumented Doctors?

The video above follows the lives of 6 medical students and reveals their thoughts on the possibility of losing their work permits and having to go back to their native countries.

At least 65 DACA recipients are in medical school, and half of them are enrolled in the Loyola-Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago. In 2016, medical school applications from undocumented students rose by 83%.

For medical student Emelin Garcia Nieto, she fears the risk of losing her loans or not being able to finish medical school. But for her, even undocumented people who are not part of DACA or Dreamers matter too, as she states,

“Those are my patients. Those are my future patients.”

Nelly Gonzales shares the same fear and states that internally, it makes her a different person.

Mother of medical student Aaima Sayed, Mahnoor Sayed, is heartbroken when she recalls her daughter struggling to study because

“I don’t know for what. I don’t see my future.”

Marina DiBartolo remains optimistic however. After she ponders for 5 seconds on the thought of DACA being revoked, she forgets about it because it doesn’t fit in her brain. She doesn’t believe that immigrants are any different from anyone else. Instead, she believes that

“All immigrants are dreamers. We all came here because of the promise of the

American dream.”
